Muscatine started out as a trading post back in 1833. The city was initially incorporated as Bloomington in 1839, but the name was changed since there was more than one city name Bloomington in the Midwest, and this reduced the chances of mail getting lost or mixed up. Muscatine is believed to have received its name from an Indian tribe called the Mascouten, but other theories exist about the name’s origin. In 1884 a button company was established by J.F. Boepple, and the city became known as the “Pearl Button Capital of the World” since the buttons were punched out of clam shells from the great Mississppi River. Unfortunately, the city was hit by an EF3 tornado in 2007, causing widespread damage, but Muscatine residents are rebuilding and claiming back their beautiful city once again.
