Zimmerman Honda Breaks Ground in Moline
By Lindsay Hocker, lhocker@qconline.com
MOLINE -- A groundbreaking was held Tuesday for a new $8 million
Zimmerman Honda dealership at the southeast corner of 70th Street and
John Deere Road in Moline.
Behind the people were shiny black Hondas in front of a construction zone.
Dealership president Mark Zimmerman said dirt work started Nov. 22,
and seeing it under way, after years of planning and talking, is "as
exciting as it gets."
The project will include an eight-car showroom, a second floor for
offices and meeting rooms, a service department with 27 bays, and a
car wash, according to a company news release. The 40,000-square-foot
dealership will open next summer.
Moline annexed land to allow the Rock Island-based dealership to move
to Moline and agreed to give the company a municipal sales tax rebate
of up to $1.9 million. City staffers estimate it will take Zimmerman
Honda about 13 years to earn the rebate. During that time, Moline
estimates it will collect $4.3 million in new tax revenues and utility
fees.
Zimmerman Honda currently is at 1740 5th Ave., Rock Island. The
company worked with Rock Island staffers for more than five years to
find a new location, but could not find one approved by Honda.
The Moline dealership will have vehicle sales, certified pre-owned
sales, service and parts under one roof for the first time. The
company expects to add up to 10 employees, according to Zimmerman
Honda.
The Zimmerman Body Shop will continue to serve customers in downtown
Rock Island, according to the company.
Fred Zimmerman and Alan Horst founded the dealership in downtown
Moline in 1952, and acquired the Honda franchise in 1973. Mark
Zimmerman became president in 1985, and made the decision to become an
exclusive Honda dealer in 2008, according to the company.
Honda zone sales manager Brian Mixon said "on behalf of Honda I'd just
like to thank Mark and his family for the investment," adding that
it's a "very positive" and appreciated investment during tough
economic times.
Moline Mayor Don Welvaert said the Zimmerman dealership is a
"significant project" for the city of Moline and Mark Zimmerman.
Mr. Zimmerman said Zimmerman has "had 50 wonderful years in Rock
Island," but the company is happy to be back in Moline.
"It's a big day," he told the crowd before grabbing a golden shovel to
break the ground.
